More than a name it’s a strategy for the truth to be told.

On August 4, 2018 after 10 years of dreaming, planning and hard work, surrounded by ecclesiastical dignitaries, family and friends, Dr. Valerie Arthur answered the call to launched out into the deep, forming a new ministry in the city of Trenton New Jersey. Christ Centered in The City International Ministries. It is the implementation of the Smith Family Foundation core value dedicated to the multifaceted complexities of Urban Ministry. Under the umbrella of Christ Centered In the City “Christ Centered In the City Urban Ministry and Leadership Development Center, Christ Centered In the City “City Café” and the Kahmale Project.

As our cities become more complex so do new possibilities to explore and understand our urban communities and what it means to be the Church. As we are devoted to making Jesus the center of every sphere that encompasses our urban centers. It is our hope to accomplish this by providing leadership training to various Christian organizations, cultivate relationships between the private sector, governmental agencies, education systems and the Christian community, and through those relationships transform systemic institutions that keep under-served communities improvised. We also are engaged internationally through our Haiti Project.

Christ Centered in The City along with the Smith Family Foundation was instrumental providing well water to an improvise community, in building a five-classroom free school in St. Michelle Haiti providing education for students who otherwise would not have the opportunity of an education.

Dr. Arthur is an ordain Elder of Mt. Sinai Holy Church of America Incorporated, she is currently assigned to Calvary Pentecostal Church, located in Trenton NJ., where she is assisted to her Pastor, Elder Pearlie Smith. She serves as the Christian Education coordinator, Sunday School Superintendent and Ministers training program coordinator.

Dr.Valerie Arthur, is the Board Chair and a founding member of the Smith Family Foundation NJ. A former prison administrator she retired in 2015, after approximately 30 years of dedicated service in the criminal justice system, where she sought to transform the systemic realities of mass incarceration from the inside out, she retired from New Jersey Department of Correction as the first African American Administrator, of the 100- year-old Edna Mahon Correctional facility for women, the only women’s prison in the State of New Jersey.


Dr. Arthur graduated (cum laude) from Carin University Langhorne PA. (formerly Philadelphia Biblical University) where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree. She received both her Master of Divinity (Magna Cum Laude) and Doctorate of Ministry Degree (Prison, Policy and Transformative Justice) from New Brunswick Theological Seminary.

She recently served as a panelist at the Warren L. Dennis Annual Metro- Urban Lecture Series. “A Prophetic Urban Ministry Approach to Traumatization in the 21st Century” At New Brunswick Theological Seminary, New Brunswick NJ.
